Die so genannte \u00abInsel der Wunder\u00bb hat weit mehr als nur idyllische, von Kokospalmen ges\u00e4umte Str\u00e4nde zu bieten. Sie ist ein Mosaik vielf\u00e4ltiger \u00d6kosysteme und ein wertvoller Hort der Biodiversit\u00e4t und des kulturellen Erbes. Einst galt sie als wichtiger Zwischenstopp auf der Gew\u00fcrzstrasse, die Insel des Tees, des Zimts, der seltenen H\u00f6lzer und Edelsteine. Mit seiner Tropfenform scheint dieses Eiland an Indien zu h\u00e4ngen wie ein Schmuckst\u00fcck am Ohr des Festlands. Das heutige Sri Lanka \u2013 w\u00f6rtlich \u00ableuchtendes Land\u00bb \u2013 wurde unter portugiesischer Herrschaft von 1505 bis 1558 Ceilao und sp\u00e4ter, unter dem britischen Empire, bis 1972 Ceylon genannt.
